The Department is extreamly pleased to announce that Jalene Herron and her mentor, Dr. Kamilla Venner, are the inaugural winners of the Sobel Duncan Science for Health in Indigenous Populations (SHIP) Award. The goal of the SHIP Award is to promote research at UNM to address Indigenous health disparities and the underlying social inequities.  The SHIP Award is given to outstanding PhD students whose research has contributed to understanding and promoting Indigenous health. Jalene received the award for her many accomplishments in research, her commitment to understanding and promoting Indigenous health, and for her Master’s thesis publication: “Cultural factors and alcohol use in American Indian adults: Results from a culturally tailored contingency management intervention.”
