Barbara McCrady, Distinguished Professor of Psycology at UNM and former director at CASAA-the Center on Alcohol, Substance Use, and Addictions, will present:

A Woman in Psychology: My Story, Our Story

Abstract:  The events of this past summer stimulated a wide range of important discussions in the country, in universities, and in the UNM Psychology Department. Discussions have considered issues of bias, prejudice, and privilege, and what the scope of these discussions should be in a university. These conversations have been difficult and emotional, and both academic and deeply personal. In this talk, Dr. McCrady will reflect on her own career as a woman in Psychology in the context of the evolution of women’s roles and opportunities in society. She will talk about her own experiences, their relevance to more universal experiences of prejudice and bias, and “lessons” learned. Dr. McCrady will welcome discussion following her formal presentation.

Dr. Barbara McCrady is Distinguished Professor of Psychology and former Director of the Center on Alcohol, Substance Use, and Addictions (CASAA). Dr. McCrady’s research focuses on developing and testing empirically supported treatments for substance use disorder (SUD): (1) effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of a cognitive-behavioral SUD treatment program; (2) conjoint treatment for persons with SUD and their spouses; (3) scientific research on Alcoholics Anonymous; and (4) alternative treatment models for women with alcohol and other SUDs. Her current research is focused on mechanisms of change in family-involved treatment, the development of a brief family-involved SUD treatment, treatments for persons involved with the criminal justice system, and behavioral and neurocognitive mechanisms of change in alcohol treatment. Her research has been funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) since 1979 and she also is the PI of an NIAAA pre- and post-doctoral NIH institutional research training grant (2010-2025).

Dr. McCrady has served as president of Division 50 of APA, president of the Research Society on Alcoholism (RSA), and Secretary-Treasurer of the Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies. She has received multiple awards for her scholarly and scientific contributions and in 2018 she received the highest UNM award for scholarship, the Annual Research Lectureship
