Research Recruitment

Project Title:

Closed-Loop Extracranial Activation using Reinforcement-Learning (CLEAR)

Principal Investigator/s:
Vincent Clark

Purpose of the Study:
We are studying the effects of noninvasive brain stimulation for improving cognition and performance.

Protocol Summary:
During this experiment, you will be asked to perform several cognitive tasks, some of which may be on a head mounted virtual reality display, and may receive noninvasive brain stimulation during these tasks. Depending on which group you are assigned, you may have your brain scanned with neuroimaging – EEG and/or fNIRS – and might have your heart beat, respiration, skin conductance or eye-movement measured. These procedures are all safe and noninvasive.

Basic Eligibility Criteria:
You must be 18-40 years old (with identification indicating date of birth), a native English speaker, and have normal (or corrected-to-normal) vision and hearing.

Compensation:
You may be compensated up to $80.

Project Title:

Relationship dynamics: Endocrinology and behavior

Principal Investigator/s:
Steven Gangestad

Purpose of the Study:
The purpose of this study is to examine how events within romantic relationships vary with hormones.

Protocol Summary:
Participation includes 4 sessions of 1.7 hours, 1 hour, 1 hour, and 40 minutes, respectively, scheduled about 1 week apart. You will be asked to complete questionnaires concerning your relationship, your sexual thoughts, and your childhood history. You’ll also complete rating tasks.

Basic Eligibility Criteria:
Participants must meet several qualifications: (1) be a woman between the ages of 18 and 35; (2) be involved in a heterosexual romantic relationship for at least 3 months; (3) be naturally ovulating – using no hormonal contraceptive pills, patches, or spirals.

Project Title:

Cognitive Neuroscience of Reward

Principal Investigator/s:
Dr. James Cavanagh

Purpose of the Study:
The purpose of the study, Cognitive Neuroscience of Reward, is to look at the brain’s response to reward information in both depressed and non-depressed participants.

Protocol Summary:
Answer questionnaires about mood and feelings;Complete a brief confidential interview about mood and feelings;Play simple learning video games for rewarding outcomes;Have your brain activity monitored through either a scalp electrodes (EEG) method, or in machines that can measure magnetic activity (MEG) or blood flow (MRI). Each method is very safe.

Basic Eligibility Criteria:
The eligibility includes men or women aged 18-55. Participants also need to either meet criteria for depression, or are free from depressive symptoms to qualify as a control; and free from psychoactive medication for at least two weeks.

Compensation:
Participants will be compensated $20 to $30 per hour depending on the study being run at that time.

Project Title:

Increasing adherence to diet and exercise self-monitoring in Hispanic/Latina women

Principal Investigator/s:
Jane Ellen Smith, Ph.D., Professor, Department Chair

Purpose of the Study:
The study is examining ways to help Hispanic/Latina women be successful in making changes to eating and exercise habits.

Protocol Summary:
As part of this research study, participants will be asked to track their food intake and exercise behavior on an on-line platform for eight weeks. Participants will also be asked to complete questionnaires about body image, eating habits, mood, and social support. These questionnaires will be completed at the beginning of the study and at four-weeks and eight-weeks, respectively, after being enrolled in the study. Some participants will have the opportunity to attend four-weekly, one-hour group sessions. These sessions are designed to teach participants skills that may help in making changes to diet and exercise behavior.

Basic Eligibility Criteria:
Ages 18-69, women who identify as Hispanic/Latina, overweight and seeking help with weight loss, reliable access to the internet or smartphone device.

Compensation:
Participants will receive free psychotherapy and be compensated up to $40 for their participation over the 8-week time period.
