Welcome to Our New Faculty Member: Angela
Bryan, Ph.D.
We
are delighted to announce the appointment of Angela Bryan, Ph.D.
as Associate Professor in the Psychology Department. Dr. Bryan was
with the Department of Psychology at the University of Colorado
from 1999 to 2007 in the Social Psychology area. Dr. Bryan is a
2006 recipient of the American Psychological Association’s
Distinguished Scientific Award for Early Career Contribution to
Psychology in the area of Health Psychology. Dr. Bryan's programmatic
research is focused on health psychology that synthesizes psychological,
physiological, and genetic determinants of behavior with the goal
of developing theoretically and empirically based interventions
to increase healthy behavior. The two behaviors she is currently
focusing on in this work are HIV/STD prevention and exercise promotion.
Related to her interests in health psychology, Dr. Bryan also studies
the statistical and methodological issues encountered in prevention
and field research, and has specific interests in structural equation
modeling and mediational analysis of intervention effects. Finally,
Dr. Bryan has secondary interests in the study of attraction, mating,
and romantic relationships from an evolutionary perspective. Dr.
Bryan has mentored a number of undergraduate honors students and
graduate students in health, social, and evolutionary psychology,
and looks forward to working with students at the University of
New Mexico.
Welcome to Our New Faculty Member: Kent
Hutchison, Ph.D.
We
are also pleased to announce the appointment of Kent Hutchison,
Ph.D., as a Professor in the Department of Psychology. Dr. Hutchison
was formerly with the Department of Psychology at the University
of Colorado from 1998 until 2007. Dr. Hutchison’s program
of research is focused on translating basic science to improvements
in our approach to the treatment of addiction. More specifically,
he has been testing basic mechanisms that underlie the motivation
to use alcohol and drugs, testing genetic factors that may influence
these mechanisms, and testing new treatment approaches that may
diminish the motivation to use alcohol and drugs. While at Colorado,
Dr. Hutchison had a very active laboratory with numerous undergraduates
(who moved on to graduate school or medical school) as well as a
number of graduate students who are now in academic positions across
the country. Dr. Hutchison looks forward to bringing new graduate
and undergraduate students into the lab at the University of New
Mexico.
